Research Interests: health inequality

Sylvia Brandt studies the dynamic relationships between institutions, the strategic behaviors of organizations and individuals, and regulatory design, with the goal of using economic theory to improve the policy process. Her research has focused on regulatory approaches in the fishing industry, and in 2009, a $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation enabled her to join an interdisciplinary team studying the effects of climate change on Mid-Atlantic fisheries. Another strand of work has addressed the social costs and policy implications of the rise in asthma, especially among the young and the poor in the U.S. Her findings have appeared in the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Marine Policy, and the Journal of Public Health, as well as in other publications.
