John Hird is Professor and Chair of Political Science at Umass Amherst. He helped to found CPPA and was its director from 1998-2006. His interest in the creation and use of policy analysis in American governance has led to numerous books, including Power, Knowledge, and Politics: Policy Analysis in the States, and the recently co-edited (with CPPA alumna Beth McBratney ’07) Controversies in Globalization and Public Policy. His previous research on environmental policy produced Superfund: The Political Economy of Environmental Risk. From 2005-2010, Hird served as co-editor of the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management. Prior to his arrival at UMass, he served with the Council of Economic Advisors (Executive Office of the President, Washington, DC) and as a research fellow at the Brookings Institution.
