Research Interests: political & economic sociology; welfare states; gender and social policy, world-system studies; race/gender/class; comparative historical sociology

Joya Misra is Professor of Sociology and Public Policy at the University of Massachusetts. She conducts research on work-family policies using a cross-national perspective, with a focus on ways that social policies can entrench or remediate existing inequalities. Three major grants from the National Science Foundation since 2006 have helped to support Misra’s research, which in 2009 garnered her the inaugural World Bank/Luxembourg Income Study Gender Research Award. Her work has appeared in the American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, Gender and Society, Social Problems, and numerous other publications. She also is the co-editor of Public Sociology: Fifteen Eminent Sociologists Debate Politics and the Profession in the 21st Century. In 2010, Misra was named the new editor of Gender and Society, the premier journal in the sociology of gender.
